THE ILIAC BAY FIELD MANUAL
⟡ ELEVEN LONG-FORM GUIDES ⟡

The Daggerfall field manual.

Daggerfall does not hold your hand. It drops you in a bay full of thieves, spellswords and necromancers with a rusty knife, then lets the map decide. These guides cover the mechanics that actually decide a run — the reroll screen, the fatigue bar, guild ranks, barter maths and the dungeon levels nobody warns you about.

Start where your build starts

Almost every Daggerfall veteran agrees on one thing: the run is decided at the creation screen, not in the first dungeon. Which eight skills you feed, whether you buy a horse before you buy a sword, and whether you join a guild on day one will shape the next twenty hours more than any piece of loot will.

Read these in order if you are new. If you already have a character running, jump to the section that is hurting: a mage who cannot cast is usually a fatigue problem, not a spellmaking problem, and a thief who is always on the wrong side of the law is usually a barter problem.

01 / BUILD

Daggerfall Character Creation Guide

The reroll screen, the eight attributes, why 50 is the magic number, how a custom class turns skills into levels, and which special advantages are actually worth the disadvantages you have to take with them.

  • Every attribute's real effect, including the thresholds people get wrong
  • How levelling actually works: the 15-point rule and the level-2 exception
  • Three tested builds: pure fighter, mage-thief hybrid, and the honest oddball

  • The three decisions to make before you leave the starting town
  • Why the first dungeon run is a trap, and how to survive it anyway
  • A ten-hour checklist with the Wayward Knight main quest framed in context

Written for the classic game

Every guide here describes The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall as it shipped in 1996 — the eight attributes, the eight skills, the guild ranks and the alchemy table of the original release. Later community patches, the Battlespire engine re-release and modern remakes changed some numbers, so where a value is patch-sensitive the guide says so instead of pretending it is permanent.

The browser edition linked on the homepage is a modern port. Treat the numbers here as the rules of the road and your own play session as the final word: if a weapon behaves differently than the guide says, believe the game.
